At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, for ECON 695, which focuses on Data Analysis and Big Data, our group’s Big Data project explored the relationship between socioeconomic factors and fare evasion in the New York City subway system.
Our hypothesis is that demographic and economic characteristics, such as poverty and education levels, influence fare evasion rates. Relationships inferred from the data between fare-evasion rates and the aforementioned demographic and economic characteristics have applications in public policy, as they may inform decision-makers about how to better allocate resources within the system to reduce fare evasion.
