Final
I’m working with Arjun on my final for Hypercinema. We both discussed ideas for the final project, and we spent three hours coming up with one on Tuesday. I think some of my biggest struggles in the program have been coming up with ideas that are well-scoped and well-thought-out. Since this is one of my first times in an art school and I’m coming up with good ideas over time, I feel pressured to do them all. I didn’t actually think coming up with an idea together would be tricky, but it turned out to be, because I get really attached to the ideas. It also stems a little from ego: wanting to pursue my own ideas, but also because this is one of my first times in a space where I’m building and making things, so I selfishly want to make the things I want to make, but that’s not how collaboration works. Furthermore, in terms of collaboration, another difficulty is articulating exactly how I want an idea to play out.
I think this is very similar to the way I worked on my physical computation midterm. I kept changing my mind for a whole month until I finalised on one idea that I was excited about. I think it’s hard to do that in a group project, and it led to a frustrating hour-long conversation yesterday. But that conversation led me to think of a story and an idea, which I might make if I get into New Arcade, and make it for the midterm in the class. Alanna told me that the concept could be developed into my thesis. I talked to Patrick, too, and he said I could also use the ICM final to prototype part of it. Anyway, for the Hypercinema final, Arjun and I decided to work on the idea that we came up with on Tuesday. The idea was to explore what anxiety feels like by walking from the subway turnstile up to the ITP floor. It will show text in a 3D space, inspired by Peter Cho’s computational typography. I also recorded a video reference.
We spoke with Aidan, and he told us that we could use p5. Arjun mentioned using WEBGL on p5. Aidan also mentioned to check out Blosm for Blender for 3D spaces instead of photogrammetry. I talked to Patrick, too, and he mentioned trying PolyCam 3D.
